At The Science Roadshow

On the 23rd of June rooms 1 and 3 went to Greenmeadow's Intermediate to participate in the Fonterra Science Roadshow. We were shown two shows.

  • Arcs, Sparks and Gherkins

This show was all about Electricity. They showed us many cool experiments like...
Can a gherkin finish a circuit so that the light works. The answer was yes, but no because a gherkin with nothing on it could not power a light but the gherkin they used had salt and vinegar on it and the salt powered the light.

They also showed us how a light bulb works. This is when there is a full circuit. If there is only a partial circuit then the light bulb will not be powered.

They showed us a cool experiment that they needed an adult to volunteer with. The experiment was using a Chair Of DOOM, as they called it. This experiment was showing us what electromagnets could be used for. The chair was connected to an electromagnet and spring so you didn't hit the ground. A parent sat on the chair and then they turned the electromagnet off. And he fell (to his death) and the springs stopped him from hitting the ground!!

  • Wonderful Water
This show is about (in the title) Water.

They did an experiment and they needed a volunteer to help them. The volunteer went up and had to put a clear waterproof poncho on in case they got wet. They then filled a jug of water up and placed a piece of card over it and then tipped upside down over the volunteers head. But no water came out?? This is called Surface Tension.

After watching they let us look around at the experiments they set up.

I made a Spirograph with the machine and you could watch the 3D printer make things. You could also see if you could lift yourself up. One of my favourites was putting the gears in the correct order to make the clock go round.

What I Learnt That I Didn't Know?
I did not know that only 3% of the earth's water was fresh and the other 97% was salt water which I found FASCINATING.

  1. Hi Kaitlyn - good to read your blog - my daughter (Issy Rogers) also went and thought the magnets were interesting. And I didn't know only 3% of the earth's water was fresh! Hope you have a good day. Chris Woods (Issy's Mum)
